Most adults develop four wisdom teeth—one in each corner of the mouth behind the second molars. Unfortunately, there is usually not enough room for these extra teeth to grow in. All of this crowding results in the wisdom teeth being unable to erupt through the gums properly – a condition commonly referred to as “impacted”. Often they grow in sideways, backward, tilted, and, sometimes, they may even remain completely under the surface of the jawbone. Removing these molars early can help prevent infections, dental shifting, cysts, and even tumors.
Most dentists and oral surgeons recommend having regular checkups to track the location of wisdom teeth and prevent these problems. We at Oral Surgery Durango want you to know that if you have been told you have an impacted wisdom tooth (or four), you’re not alone! This common condition is one that we treat regularly in our office. Dr. Reid is specially trained to handle even the most complex cases of impacted teeth.
Wisdom teeth start developing beneath the gums long before they grow into your mouth. This can sometimes make it difficult to know if they are growing correctly before it’s too late. If your teeth grow in without causing problems, they will not need to be removed, but in most cases, removing them prevents oral and dental health problems.
Having regular dental checkups once every 6 months is the best way to know when removal is necessary. In general, early removal can make the entire process easier for the following reasons:
Even if you have fully grown in wisdom teeth, removal is almost always possible when you go to a skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Dr. Reid has years of experience removing wisdom teeth efficiently and safely.
