Bone grafts are typically performed to preserve bone, support implants, or repair defects of the jaws. If you lose a tooth, your jawbone will start to atrophy without a root in place. It can change the shape of your jaw, cause sinus pneumatization, and can possibly compromise the stability of surrounding teeth. Dental bone grafting can help prepare you for other forms of dental treatment if necessary in the future.
We use the latest techniques to restore bone density and create a strong foundation for whatever your dental needs may be.
After a tooth extraction, a bone graft may be placed in the socket to preserve the bone structure. The bone that holds the tooth in place (the socket) is often damaged by disease and/or infection, resulting in an abnormality of the jaw after extraction. With bone grafting in socket preservation, the socket heals, eliminating shrinkage and collapse of the surrounding gum and facial tissues. The newly formed bone also provides a foundation for an implant to replace the tooth or to bolster adjacent teeth for their continued health.
In cases where the upper jaw lacks sufficient bone height for dental implant placement, a sinus lift procedure can be performed. The maxillary sinuses are behind your cheeks and on top of the upper teeth. Sometimes the roots of the natural upper teeth can extend up into the maxillary sinuses. When the sinus wall is very thin, it is impossible to place dental implants in this bone. A sinus lift is one of the most common bone grafting procedures for patients with bone loss in the upper jaw. This involves adding bone graft material to the sinus area to increase bone volume and create a sturdy foundation for implant placement.
Ridge augmentation is a surgical procedure aimed at reconstructing the alveolar ridge, the bone that holds the teeth. When the jawbone has experienced significant resorption this type of treatment can be performed. Bone grafts are placed along the jaw ridge to rebuild its shape, height, and width. It is often necessary when this bone becomes insufficient due to tooth loss, gum disease, or trauma. The primary goal is to restore the original bone dimensions in preparation for dental implants.
