At Oral Surgery Durango we offer different options of sedation to help you through your dental journey. Anesthesia is an important part of every oral surgery procedure. Sedation is needed for different reasons including anxiety, complexity of procedure, and simply for your comfort. Our goal for you at our office to to create a simple and easy experience that meets your individual needs. We have a wide spectrum of choices available to us today. We can block pain, calm your nerves, and even give you a restful sleep if you want while we work through your procedure.
Oral surgeons are trained and qualified in all types of anesthesia, from local to general and everything in between. Dr. Reid spent 6 years in residency in a hospital learning how to evaluate, deliver and monitor patients under anesthesia.
You will always be given local anesthesia for your surgery, but you may choose additional anesthesia to supplement your procedure. Each choice requires different preparation on your part. We will always discuss in detail your options for sedation, if it is necessary, at the time of your consultation.
Local anesthesia is always a part of any procedure. It will produce a numb feeling in the area being operated on but there will be a feeling of pressure during surgery. You will be fully awake and recall the surgery, but there should be no significant discomfort.
Also known as "laughing gas." You will be relaxed and somewhat less aware of your surroundings but will recall most of the surgery. Nitrous oxide is used in conjunction with local anesthesia but may also be used to supplement other anesthetic choices.
This may be a supplement to local anesthesia and is medication taken by mouth to produce relaxation before and during your operation. We can supplement nitrous oxide with oral pre-medication to increase effects.
Medications are given through a vein in your arm or hand, which will cause total relaxation and, although you will not actually be unconscious, there will be very little recall, if any, of the events surrounding surgery.
Intravenous sedation includes local anesthesia (numbing).
Your safety is our number one priority. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have an excellent safety record in anesthesia. The training for anesthesia during oral surgery residency is very extensive, more so than for any other health specialist, with the exception of anesthesiologists.
